Smeltz says All Whites well placed

Striker Shane Smeltz says the All Whites are in great shape ahead of the Oceania Nations Cup starting in the Solomon Islands on Friday.

Smeltz, who scored his 18th international goal in the win over Honduras on Sunday, says that win has done a fresh-faced All Whites squad a power of good heading into Honiara.

If New Zealand retains their Oceania title they will qualify for both the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the next stage of FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Smeltz says you can really sense with this squad that it's got the depth and youth you want in a squad..... they still have a few players to come in and strengthen it right up.

He says it's probably the best position the national team has been in a long time.

New Zealand open their campaign on Saturday against Fiji before meeting Papua New Guinea on Monday and the Solomon Islands on Wednesday.

The All Whites arrive in Honiara tomorrow.
