Elliot and Gear called up for All Black training camp

The Chiefs hooker Hikawera Elliot and Highlanders wing Hosea Gear have been named as replacement players to attend the All Blacks training camp this week in Wellington.

Elliot comes in for Blues hooker Keven Mealamu who is carrying calf injury, while Gear replaces Hurricanes wing Cory Jane who has a high ankle sprain.

All Blacks Coach Steve Hansen says Gear got the nod over the Hurricanes fullback Andre Taylor as there are already two utility backs in the squad in Ben Smith and Tamati Ellison who can cover fullback.

Hansen says a scan has revealed Mealamu has a second strain in a different part of the same calf, so selectors have decided to take a prudent approach with the veteran.

Mealamu will still attend the Wellington camp and Hansen says it's hoped he'll recover in time to take part in June's test series against Ireland.

The All Blacks 30-man squad for the June series will be named in Auckland on Sunday June 3rd.
