Canadian wins Giro d'Italia

Ryder Hesjedal has become the first Canadian to win a Grand Cycling Tour after snatching victory in the Giro d'Italia.

31-year-old Hesjedal overturned a 31-second deficit in the final time trial to win the title by sixteen seconds from Spain's long-time race leader Joaquim Rodriguez.

It was a rare case of the pink jersey changing hands on the last day, and for the first time in 17 years there was no Italian on the final podium.

New Zealander Jesse Sergent finished third on the final time trial and fellow Kiwi Jack Bauer was 32nd among the 157 survivors.
