Meninga says it was a try

New South Wales players and fans were left dumbfounded after a controversial late try gave Queensland an 18-10 win in game one of the State of Origin rugby league series in Melbourne.

Video referee Sean Hampstead controversially awarded Greg Inglis the match-winning try seven minutes from time, ruling that Blues hooker Robbie Farah had deliberately kicked the ball out of Inglis's hands as he attempted to score.

The Blues captain Paul Gallen called the decision ridiculous, but Queensland coach Mal Meninga says it was the right call.

Queensland are now well on their way to a seventh straight series win with game two in Sydney in three weeks.
