Gear staying in New Zealand to fight for All Blacks spot

The Highlanders wing Hosea Gear has spurned an offer from Japanese rugby to remain in New Zealand and fight to reclaim his All Blacks jersey.

The 28-year-has turned down an offer from the Toshiba club and says he will likely play for the Highlanders again next year.

Gear says he hasn't heard if he'll be called into the second All Blacks training camp for the injured Cory Jane but says he wants to stay in New Zealand and fight for a place in the squad.

Gear missed out on the 35-man All Black training squad last week but may still be seen in the black jersey for next month's three-test series against Ireland with the Highlanders flyer and Hurricanes fullback Andre Taylor the front runners to replace Jane in the second camp in Wellington.
