Both New Zealand crews involved in the final Olympic qualifying rowing regatta in Lucerne have missed out on a place in London.

It has been 26 years since New Zealand has had a men's eight at an Olympics and they were beaten into second place by four seconds by the United States, who grabbed the only Olympic spot.

The men's lightweight four finished third in their race, just 1.3 seconds away from second and a place at the Games.

New Zealand will have 11 crews rowing in London.
