Camper closes in on leader

2:57 pm on 2 May 2012

Team New Zealand's boat Camper has made the most of their fourth and final crossing of the doldrums, closing to within two miles of leader Puma on the sixth leg of the Volvo Ocean race to Florida.

Camper is now just 1.8 nautical miles behind the Americans.

Camper navigator Will Oxley is hoping for similar inroads over the coming day as the trades erupt.

He says all you can do is sail the course you believe is the fastest to the finish line, so at this point they're not trying to cover other boats, they're just trying to sail the course we think will get is there as quick as possible.

Overall leader Telefonica is another mile back in third.
