The V8 Supercar championship leader Will Davison has won the first race of the Hamilton 400, collecting his third win of the season and extending his lead in the series over second-placed Jamie Whincup.

Davison started from sixth on the grid and made up ground on a hectic first lap before overtaking pole sitter Garth Tander on lap 27, the Ford driver leading home the defending series champion Whincup and Tander, both in Holdens.

Defending race champion Shane van Gisbergen started from second on the grid but his Ford clipped the wall on the second turn after a clash and finished 22nd.

Fabian Coulthard was the fastest New Zealander in ninth place.

Greg Murphy didn't finish.
