Inglis helps Souths to miracle NRL win

6:39 am on 2 April 2012

South Sydney has narrowly edged Sydney rivals Wests Tigers 17-16 in a thrilling National Rugby League clash, thanks to an ugly but effective golden point field goal from Greg Inglis.

The Rabbitohs somehow managed to escape from a 16-4 hole with four minutes remaining to force the game into extra time before Inglis perched himself on the 30 metre line, 20 metres behind the play and launched what was a mongrel punt off the boot.

The kick touched a defender's hand, clipped the left-hand upright and bobbled over the crossbar to give the Bunnies the one-point win and spark pandemonium on the field for the men wearing red and green.

The financially embattled Gold Coast Titans lost more than just the game on Sunday, defeated 30-20 by the Canterbury Bulldogs but also losing three players to injury, including representative star Greg Bird.

Bird was assisted from the field in agony after an attempted last play bomb went horribly wrong in the 65th minute at Skilled Park.

Early indications are he's sustained a bad ankle sprain but no break.
