Michael Llodra was fined $US 2,500 ($NZ 3,000) for using a racial slur during his opening-round match against Latvian Ernests Gulbis at the ATP Tour tournament at Indian Wells.

The French player yelled at a Chinese female supporter of Gulbis during his four set win in California.

The incident was witnessed by Canadian journalist Tom Tebbutt who wrote about it on social networking site Twitter.

He says Llodra's behaviour was deplorable.

Officials say Llodra was also verbally abusive towards the ballboys and their coordinator during the match.

Besides the fine, Llodra had to apologise for his actions.
