Complaints about apple exports to Australia

7:32 am on 8 February 2012

Some apple growers say they are blocked from the Australian market and want the process reviewed.

Growers wanting to export to Australia have to send their apples to a packhouse registered by the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry.

But Hawke's Bay grower Phil Allison says only 10 packhouses were given licences to pack for the Australian market, and many smaller growers are missing out.

Independent marketing consultant Paul Dellabarca says some growers have shares in packhouses that are not registered for Australia, and can't afford to send apples to other sheds.
