Infant formula produced at the Synlait Milk company's new processing plant at Dunsandel in Canterbury will go on sale in China next month.

The $100 million plant, touted as the Southern Hemisphere's largest and most sophisticated infant nutritional facility, was officially opened on Wednesday.

Synlait Milk's Chinese joint-owner, Bright Dairy, will launch its Pure Canterbury infant formula in Shanghai in three weeks, at a retail price of about $NZ80 a can.

From its beginnings as a milk powder ingredients business, Synlait is now branding itself as a global nutrition company.
