Alliance Group has confirmed it will close its Sockburn meat plant in Christchurch at the end of the processing season - between May and July next year.
The meat co-operative has made its final decision after four weeks of consultation with the plant's 250 staff and unions.
Alliance processes cattle, deer and pigs at Sockburn and also does some lamb cutting there.
The company says the plant hasn't run at a profit in recent years and it intends to transfer the operations to other sites, offering
workers at Sockburn the chance to shift to those other plants where that's practicable.
Beef processing will go to the company's Mataura plant in Southland and Pukeuri in North Otago, where capacity is being expanded.
Venison processing will go to a new facility to be built at the Smithfield plant in Timaru.
Pig processing done at Sockburn on behalf of Porkcorp New Zealand will shift to Ashburton Meat Processors.
