Big rise in milk production

6:01 am on 5 October 2011

Fonterra says milk flows are up 13% on the same time last year, putting pressure on collection, manufacturing and the supply chain across the country.

It says a good autumn and reasonable winter around the country have led to the record production.

Operations director Gary Romano says there have been some disruptions to milk collection as a result of the pressure, but a number of contingency plans are in place to deal with the extra milk.

Fonterra says it's too early in the season to adjust its total milk forecasts, despite the wave of milk coming in earlier than forecast.

It says the situation could change depending on weather conditions over the rest of the season.
