Pasture competition time

7:15 pm on 5 October 2011

Dairy farmers in Waikato and Bay of Plenty will be hoping the grass is not greener on the other side of the boundary fence, as a competition to find the best pasture in the region nears.

DairyNZ first held the competition last year, with the aim of improving the quality of grass after years of drought and insect damage.

Farm system specialist Chris Glassey says good-natured rivalry encourages discussion on pasture renewal.

Farmers can enter two categories: the best pasture renewed this year, and the best pasture renewed more than three years ago.

The winners will each get a thousand dollars worth of seeds and herbicides for further pasture renewal.

Entries must be lodged by the end of October, with judging during November and field days on the winning farms in early December.
