Kiwifruit industry structure to stay - PM

6:00 am on 4 May 2011

Prime Minister John Key has confirmed that the Government won't dismantle the kiwifruit industry's single desk marketing structure unless that's what the majority of growers want.

He was speaking at a Beehive function where Zespri formally thanked the Government and Parliament for creating the current structure, with the passing of the Kiwifruit Regulations 12 years ago.

They give Zespri control of exports to all markets except Australia.

Zespri says more than 90% of growers support the marketing structure which has allowed the industry to grow at almost 10% per year over the past decade to become a $1 billion export earner.

Chief executive Lain Jager says Zespri plans to triple the industry's export earnings to $3 billion by 2025, from twice the current production.

Mr Key pledged the Government's continued support, based on growers' wishes.
