Rural groups plan central storm damage help

Rural support groups plan to meet on Monday to organise support for flood-affected farms in Hawke's Bay.

A storm hit the area last week destroying roads, blocking laneways with silt and debris, ruining paddocks and smashing fencing allowing stock to roam free.

Federated Farmers regional president, Kevin Mitchell, says the affected area is a thin strip of coastal land south of Napier, from Cape Kidnappers to Porangahau.

One farm had lost up to three-quarters of the property to slips and other damage.

Mr Mitchell says the meeting of his organisation, the east coast rural support co-ordinator and other agencies aims to get help for farmers as soon as possible.

He says many farms need urgent assistance with fencing and finding alternative grazing.
