Appeal being considered after failure of court bid

The GE Free New Zealand lobby group will consider an appeal after failing in a High Court bid to block ongoing experiments with genetically modified animals by AgResearch.

The Crown research institute obtained approval from the Environmental Risk Management Authority earlier this year to continue the work it has been doing with GM cattle, as well as goats and sheep, for another 20 years.

GE Free asked the court to send back the institute's application on the grounds that it did not contain enough information about what it was doing and why.

The group says the court's rejection of its request sets a precedent that has to be challenged.

In the meantime, AgResearch says it's continuing with research at Ruakura.

The head of applied biotechnologies says the legal action by GE Free has not affected or delayed the work.

Dr Jimmy Suttie says the institute's research is transparent and not hidden in secrecy, as has been claimed.
