Dry conditions spreading

1:10 pm on 24 November 2010

Dry conditions in the far north are also hitting farmers in Waikato and the upper South Island.

Dairy NZ says there has been no significant rainfall in these regions for up to three months.

Soil moisture levels are approaching deficits similar to levels typical for February and up to 40-mills of rain is needed to prevent pasture being damaged.

Dairy NZ regional manager Chris Murphy says dairy farmers need to keep a close watch on their pasture conditions and make weekly management decisions based on current, not expected, pasture covers.

Dairy NZ will provide farmers with weekly updates on soil moisture levels.
