A Timaru-based rural broadband provider believes satellite technology is a long term solution for extending high speed internet access to all of rural New Zealand.

Farmside has more than 12,000 rural broadband customers.

Its chair and acting chief executive, Ritchie Smith, told a symposium in Rotorua that satellite technology will play a major part in connecting rural areas to broadband and meeting the Government's plan of 80% of rural households getting a five megabite per second service within five years.
