Time running out for grain farmers to replace silos

A Canterbury farming leader says time is running out for grain farmers wanting to replace silos that damaged in last month's earthquake.

Federated farmers' North Canterbury grains section chairman Murray Rowlands says more than 100 silos were damaged in the quake and only about a dozen have been replaced.

He says harvesting of this season's crop is only eight weeks away and sourcing new silos takes time.

Mr Rowlands says if farmers don't organise replacement silos they run the risk of being forced to sell freshly harvested grain to mills at low prices.
