UK report claims halal slaughter of NZ lamb

The Meat Industry Association is monitoring reaction to a British newspaper report that says most New Zealand lamb exported to the UK is slaughtered using Muslim halal procedures.

The report, which says this is not disclosed on the label, has received 150 comments, with some people saying they will no longer buy New Zealand lamb.

The association's trade and economic manager, Dan Coup, says the industry's slaughter methods comply with animal welfare standards, which require all animals to be stunned so that they're unconscious when they are killed.

He says the industry is concerned the comments will dent consumer confidence in New Zealand lamb.
