Farmers are being advised to protect their stock: bitterly cold temperatures, rain and wind are expected over the next few days.

MetService forecasts strong westerly winds from Thursday afternoon, followed by near-zero wind-chill conditions, rain and snow to low levels.

Chief forecaster Peter Kreft says cold conditions are likely to spread onto western and southern parts of the South Island from late Friday until early next week.
