Deer farming economics examined

5:01 pm on 21 August 2010

The economics of deer farming, compared with other land use options, are under the spotlight in Canterbury on Friday.

A fielday at Fairton hall near Ashburton is to focus on the challenges of raising and finishing deer for venison production, especially for the chilled export season just getting under way.

Deer Industry New Zealand says deer are facing increasing competition on intensive finishing properties, where they make up just one of the land use options open to those farmers.

The fielday began at Fairton hall, just north of Ashburton, at noon.
