Regional council chair urges Fonterra to boycott operators

The head of the Wellington Regional Council is urging Fonterra to boycott "dirty dairy" operators.

A council audit of 146 dairy farms in the Wellington region found only half comply with resource consents, while almost a third had serious breaches.

Chair Fran Wilde says farmers are on notice to clean up their act or face court action.

Fonterra says it is working with individual farmers, all around the country, to sort consent issues.

It says that includes four large dairy farms in Southland which have all been fined $20,000 for polluting streams.
