An agreement to be signed today should see more fur fly from the backs of possums into high-value blended wool and possum fibre products.

The memorandum of understanding between the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the New Zealand Fur Council will make it easier for accredited possum hunters and trappers to gain access to public conservation land.

From DOC's point of view, it will help in the battle to control the country's number one animal pest.

The Fur Council, which represents processing, hunting and related interests, hopes the agreement will boost the supply of possum fibre.

It said the industry could not meet international demand for blended wool and possum fur garments, which are unique to New Zealand.
