NZ to open door to more raw milk cheeses

6:20 am on 14 June 2010

Cheese lovers will soon be able to buy more raw milk cheeses in this country.

New import standards are being finalised by Biosecurity New Zealand and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority.

Some raw milk cheeses are available in New Zealand but new standards will broaden the range available.

Food Safety Authority assistant director for import and export Chris Kebbell says the standards will overcome any remaining concerns over the use of unpasteurised milk.

Mr Kebbell says importers will need to demonstrate their production and manufacture systems meet New Zealand's safety and food regulations.
