Goat conference on in Queenstown

6:22 am on 23 May 2014

Goat farmers are hoping a three-day conference being held in Queenstown will help galvanise the industry.

About 80 farmers from four separate goat groups - Mohair, Meat Goat, Boer Goat and New Zealand Goat - will be at the conference, which starts on Friday, and they are hoping some dairy goat farmers will attend, too.

Boer Goat Breeders Association chair Geoff Muggeridge said it was essential the sector worked more collaboratively.

"Really, we don't even know what number of producers we have, or what numbers of animals are involved throughout the country," he said.

"So we need to identify where our producers are and then also then we need to seek resources to drive the industry forward."

Mr Muggeridge said 136,000 goats were slaughtered in New Zealand last season. The 1100 tonnes of goat meat exported was worth $6.5 million.

Reunion Island and Trinidad and Tobago were the main export markets.
