The New Zealand deer industry organisation says a new deer handling and management qualification is likely to invigorate the industry.

A pilot course begins next month in Southland and will be followed up in other places later in the year.

The course will cover animal nutrition, behaviour, breeding and genetics and will include visits to deer farms and hands-on experience with deer.

Deer Industry New Zealand producer manager Tony Pearse says it's likely to encourage new people into deer farming. " I do think the industry's confidence will build now the focus is on the next generation."

He says the focus now is on how deer fit into modern farming systems.
