Effluent check reassures farmers

DairyNZ says its new warrant of fitness programme for assessing effluent systems will give farmers peace of mind they are compliant year round.

On some farms, problems can include small effluent ponds liable to overflow during winter rains or other big storms.

A dairy effluent warrant of fitness programme, developed with the support of DairyNZ, was launched on Tuesday, at the Waikato Effluent Expo at Mystery Creek.

It gives farmers the opportunity to have their system examined by a certified assessor, who is independent of any companies that sell farm products.

DairyNZ's sustainability team leader Dr Theresa Wilson says there was a need to develop a consistent method for assessing an effluent system to ensure it is fit for purpose for the farm.
