WA growers deliver record grain harvest

6:16 am on 20 December 2013

Grain growers in Western Australia have delivered a grain harvest of more than 15 million tonnes, the biggest in the history of the state.

The CBH Group, a cooperative that handles, markets and processes grain from the WA wheatbelt, said the yield surpassed the previous record of 15.06 million tonnes, achieved in 2011/2012.

AAP reports a record number of tonnes was also handled on one day - more than 500,000 tonnes on 27 November.

"This is obviously good for the farmers, their families and their rural communities, and provides valuable export income to the Western Australian economy," said state agriculture minister Ken Baston.

The record harvest will continue, with several growers still to deliver their grain.
