Federated Farmers says Fonterra and the Government need to communicate with the market more carefully in the future, if another contamination scare was to occur.
The Ministry for Primary Industries says international tests of Fonterra whey protein found it was free of the bacterium that can cause botulism, clostridium botulinum.
It had been mistaken for a similar organism, clostridium sporogenes.
Federated Farmers vice-president William Rolleston says the ministry and Fonterra both did the right thing in alerting the market to the potential scare.
But he says they may need to review how the message was managed.
Mr Rolleston says Fonterra's global reputation means it needs to handle its communications carefully, so the market isn't spooked unnecessarily.
