Gareth Daniel and Gareth Evans were beaten by West Coast father and son, Sam and Jason Win, at the Reefton centennial A&P Show, in the opening match of an eight-show, four-test New Zealand tour.
However Gareth Daniel gained some consolation when he later beat Jason Win in the final of a one-lamb speed shear at Inangahua.
The visiting shearers' next contest will be at the Otago Championships in Balclutha on Friday and Saturday, where a Welsh wool handling team will also be competing.
