Far North farmer bucks the trend

1:04 pm on 2 February 2010

A Kaitaia dairy farmer says he's still milking twice a day and his production for the year remains ahead of last season.

Ian Walker farms for dry summer conditions that he says were normal in the Far North until a string of wet summers set in seven or eight years ago.

Mr Walker compares this summer to the sort of weather experienced in the early-mid 1980s. There's been no significant rain since September.

He says he's "always erred on the conservative and prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best."

He gets his hay in before Labour weekend, but says he will be running out of supplements in two to three weeks.
