Continued support for research levies urged

AgResearch is urging sheep and beef farmers to continue their financial support for research and development by voting "yes" in a levy referendum by Meat & Wool New Zealand.

Farmers are voting this month on whether to pay levies for another five years to fund activities ranging from research to meat and wool promotion.

Chief executive Dr Andrew West says science and farming are absolutely intertwined and the levy proposal gives farmers a strong R&D portfolio which is based on a longer term strategic plan.

Agresearch is making further staffing cuts to save money so it can meet the Government's requirement for a financial dividend.

Dr West says the cuts are accentuating gaps in core pastoral research.
