Ministry predicts slight lift in pipfruit income

An analysis of pipfruit production by the Ministry for Primary Industries shows apple and pear growers should expect slightly improved profitability this year because of better prices.

The analysis is based on models of two orchards in Hawke's Bay and Nelson, together with an overview of the financial performance of typical orchards and information from growers and industry stakeholders.

The ministry says a cool spring, which delayed flowering and harvest by about two weeks, means a shorter window than usual for early-season sales in Asia.

It also says overall production and sizing of the fruit is more varied than usual, but fruit colour and quality are generally excellent.
