Formula firm sees domestic opportunities

A new infant formula company says it wants to supply New Zealand first, despite increasing demand from China.

Carrickmore Nutrition in Canterbury has launched a line of formula which will appear on South Island supermarket shelves this week. The formula is made using milk supplied by Fonterra.

Managing director Chris Claridge says the formula will also be exported to China.

But he says there are a lack of local brands on the market in New Zealand and he says he wants to plug that gap.

"Virtually all the brands that are currently available in the supermarkets, almost without exception, are multi-national and foreign brands and in fact most of the infant formula sold in supermarkets isn't actually made in New Zealand it's imported."
