Kiwifruit growers supporting national pest strategy for Psa.

The Kiwifruit Vine Health organisation says growers are supporting a new national pest management strategy it is proposing to control the bacterial-disease Psa.

KVH is halfway through a series of grower meetings it is holding to seek feedback on the proposal.

Currently there are only two such strategies in place, for American Foulbrood in bees and bovine tuberculosis in cattle and deer.

Since it was first found on a Te Puke orchard in late 2010, Psa has infected about 1200 or 37% of the country's kiwifruit orchards.

Chief executive of KVH Barry O'Neil says there is no technology to eradicate Psa, and he is optimistic growers will support a long-term management plan.

The strategy would need Government approval.
