Farming innovations again feature at Fieldays

6:31 am on 14 June 2012

The latest innovations thought up mainly by farmers for farmers are once again one of the central features at Fieldays.

Manawatu dairy farmer, David Clement, has developed a Fence Hopper - to help an ageing farmer population to get over electric fences with minimal effort and no shocks.

The innovation looks like a pocket-knife with two teeth on the end which hooks and lowers the wire so the farmer can more easily hop over the fence.

Mr Clement says if farmers show interest in the product, he'll develop it further.

Malcolm Sinclair from Southland is developing a converted shipping container into an animal composting facility which turns animal remains into fertiliser.

He says the fertiliser can be spread back on the farms or taken away and used as a mix for nurseries.

The winner of the Supreme Innovator Award will be announced on Thursday morning.
