Rotorua-based Kapenga M Trust has won this year's Ahuwhenua Maori Excellence in Farming award.

The farming trust was acknowledged for excellent productivity, governance and sustainability on its 330 hectare dairy farm, 20km south of Rotorua.

The judges said Kapenga M Trust stood out for its success as a caretaker of the land, ensuring it remains available for future generations.

The competition alternates annually between dairying and sheep and beef farming.

Trust chairman Roku Mihinui accepted the Ahuwhenua Trophy in Auckland at the weekend.

The competition also included a Young Maori Farmer Cadet-Trainee Award which was won by Tangaroa Walker from Kennington in Southland.
