All kiwifruit orchards to be checked

Every kiwifruit orchard in the country will be tested for chemical use, after a number of growers admitted injecting vines with antibiotics to combat PSA.

Zespri says it accepts a small minority of growers may have acted illegally in applying antibiotics to their orchards. Their fruit will not be exported.

The New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers president Neil Trebilco told Morning Report that he thinks all the growers who did it have come forward voluntarily, and most injected only a few vines.

He admits it is not a good look for the industry, but said it was done at a time when PSA was devastating the growers and ruining their crops and livelihoods.
