Dozens of Fonterra suppliers still without power

Fonterra says 60 to 70 of its suppliers in storm-hit areas were still without power on Monday.

Regional operations manager for the lower North Island Scott Walls says one of the priorities has been to collect milk quickly from farms that do not have the ability to keep it chilled.

Fonterra, working with local fire brigades, has also provided a tanker and trailer unit to deliver water for stock to farms without power.

Federated Farmers says members in Taranaki have banded together to keep disruption to milk production to a minimum.

Taranaki dairy chair Derek Gibson says generators are being moved from farm to farm.

Powerco estimated that about 2300 customers in South Taranaki and Whanganui districts were likely to be without power Tuesday night.

The company says more remote areas could remain cut off for up to five days.
