Kirkpatrick wins Golden Shears

Napier shearer John Kirkpatrick won the Golden Shears Open final in Masterton on Saturday night.

Kirkpatrick, a three-time champion, took 16 minutes and 8 seconds to shear 20 sheep.

Former Golden Shears champion Angus Moore won the all-wools shearing prize, in which five wool types were used. He took 19 minutes and 42 seconds to do 16 sheep.

The Golden Shears were run in conjunction with the World Championships.

Gavin Mutch of Taranaki won the World machine shearing title and Gisborne woolhandler Joel Henare won the World woolhandling final.

Zweliwile Hans of South Africa won the World blades title, after shearing seven sheep in 21 minutes and 17 seconds.

Joanne Kumeroa won her sixth Golden Shears wool handling open title, with Joel Henare in second place.

This year's Golden Shears ttracted 540 competitors from 25 countries.
