The Rugby World Cup Minister says the Auckland Council's late expansion of the waterfront fanzone justifies the Government's decision to step in after the opening-night celebrations.
The new Wynyard Quarter fanzone will open this weekend after
a casting vote by the mayor last night secured up to $1.5 million for an expansion of the waterfront space.
Overcrowding on the opening night of the tournament a month ago led to some people crushed and others being turned away from the fanzone.
The minister, Murray McCully, says the council's move "reinforces the need for the Government to have acted speedily and with certainty at the beginning of the tournament, which is what we did".
