Auckland Council says it will take a $14 million hit if public transport subsidies are cut.
The New Zealand Transport Agency proposes cutting its contribution to public transport infrastructure projects from 60% to 50%.
A range of other cuts apply to transport planning, community road safety programmes and commuter rail services.
The council's transport committee has heard that the combined effect on next year's budgets would be $14 million.
Committee chairman Mike Lee says the council will object.
He says the cuts come on top of higher charges for using rail tracks, and the Government shifting the cost of new electric trains onto ratepayers.
