Police investigating the theft of high-powered firearms in Northland are looking for a distinctive red blanket that may have been used to wrap them.

Police say this distinctive blanket may help them track down gun thieves.

The red polyester-velvet blanket went missing from the home of a Dargaville gun collector this month, along with 15 weapons, including assault rifles, a sub-machinegun and pistols.

Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said the gun thieves may have either kept the blanket or dumped it, and someone may have noticed it.

"We realise the photo of the blanket isn't the best, but let us be very clear - these high-powered firearms are in the hands of criminals, we are doing everything we can to identify them and get these guns off them.

"But we need public assistance - it's not just any old red blanket. It could help us to solve this very serious case," he said.
