Police arrested the alleged attacker on Friday night after they were called to an incident in Clifford Street.
The man, 48, has been remanded in custody to appear in Whangarei District Court on Wednesday.
The victim is in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital and police are asking anyone with information about the attack to contact them.
