The police said officers were set upon when they stopped three cars with nine people in them on State Highway 1 in Cheviot this afternoon.

Cheviot Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out to support the officers until more police arrived from Culverden, Rangiora and Christchurch.

One of the two officers received minor facial injuries.

Three men have been arrested and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on a range of charges.
