A 10-year old boy has been killed in the Kaipara District in Northland after being run over by a milk tanker this morning, St John says.

Emergency services are at the scene of the incident, which occurred at Maungaturoto about 9.30am.

Police said initial indications were that the child was riding a pushbike and fell from the footpath under the wheels of the tanker trailer.

The police serious crash unit was investigating.

The boy was dead when two ambulance crews arrived but they worked on the boy at the scene.

Two fire engines attended the accident and a helicopter was also on stand-by.

Fonterra has a processing factory in Maungaturoto.

The co-operative's managing director of global operations Robert Spurway said Fonterra was working with police and were supporting the driver, as well as the local community.

"This is a terribly tragic accident and our thoughts are with the child's family and loved ones."
