Police said two young people - who were known to the victim - confronted him with weapons in his house about 5am today.

He was forced him to drive his car to two ATMs, before going to a petrol station, where he was able to escape.

The man has been treated at Christchurch Hospital for minor stab wounds and was expected to be discharged today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said a Temuka resident contacted the police after the car used in the kidnap was towed to a service station.

Mr Cottam said the teenagers were taken into custody without incident, and were being interviewed by the police.
